On Sunday (World Vegan Day), vegan eatery Project Pollo is giving away 1,600 chicken sandwiches at its original food cart location at Roadmap Brewery in San Antonio,TX. Project Pollo will only offer one menu item, with no modifications, that day (first come, first served from noon to 7pm, limit one per person): the Original Project, a sandwich that features house-breaded vegan chicken, served with homemade aioli and dill pickles. While the eatery typically makes its sandwiches with proprietary vegan chicken patties, the patties used during the event were a last-minute donation made by vegan food company Gardein. Customers are advised to arrive early as long lines are expected.
Vegan entrepreneur Lucas Bradbury launched the Project Pollo to challenge the traditional idea of chicken with vegan versions of classics such as sandwiches, strips, and wraps, along with sides, including mac and cheese and loaded papas. Project Pollo’s mission is also to challenge norms in other ways such as paying its employees $15 per hour (substantially above the local minimum wage) and using its menu items to support community organizations. Currently, the company donates $1 from sales of its Original Project sandwich to animal charities, and is changing its menu to include other “project” items that benefit underprivileged children and people struggling with hunger and homelessness. “We’re people over profits,” Bradbury told VegNews. “That’s our main project: pollo with a purpose.”
The World Vegan Day giveaway is also a celebration of Project Pollo’s aggressive expansion, which will bring new brick-and mortar-locations of the vegan shop, all with drive thrus, to four locations in Texas before spring 2021: three in San Antonio (in the Castle Hills, Hollywood Park and Five Points neighborhoods), along with one in the city of Austin.
