Dear Readers,
Today, on World Environment Day, we stand at a critical juncture in the history of our planet. The state of our climate has reached a dire point, and urgent action is needed. As we mark 12 consecutive months of record-breaking temperatures, it is clear that our Earth is sending us a powerful message. The time for change is now.
We are reminded of the words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres: “For the past year, every turn of the calendar has turned up the heat. Our planet is trying to tell us something. But we don’t seem to be listening. We’re shattering global temperature records and reaping the whirlwind. It’s climate crunch time. Now is the time to mobilize, act, and deliver.”
And the fight against the climate crisis starts with good information.
At Earth.Org, we are committed to addressing the pressing environmental challenges we face through accurate, impartial, independent, and free journalism. Our mission is to provide you with vital environmental news, data analysis, research, and policy solutions to empower you to make informed decisions and take action to protect our planet.
Free, Impartial, Comprehensive Climate Coverage…
2024 is the biggest election year our world has ever seen. As the climate crisis intensifies in every corner of the world, we remain committed to monitoring the role of climate policies in election campaigns and analyzing the outcomes. Last month, we scrutinized the climate agenda of parties running for election in India and the United Kingdom and spoke with European Greens lead candidate Bas Eickhout ahead of the European Parliament election this weekend.
Besides elections, climate litigation is also emerging as a powerful tool to tackle the ongoing crisis.
Last month, a landmark victory of a group of elderly Swiss women at the European Court of Human Rights set an important precedent for future cases, reminding that countries have a legal responsibility to take real climate action. Climate-threatened small island states also won a historic legal battle at a UN court on maritime law, which led to a long-sought court’s clarification on the legally binding obligations of the 169 signatories of the 1994 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to “prevent, reduce and control marine pollution from anthropogenic [greenhouse gas] emissions.”
We looked at the implications of the official rejection of the Anthropocene as a new geological epoch on popular discourses around anthropogenic climate change, and at the growing threat of environmental crime, one of the world’s most damaging, rapidly growing, and lucrative crimes.
With heat intensifying and many parts of the world witnessing record-breaking temperatures, we are also closely monitoring how cities and climate-vulnerable sectors such as agriculture are adapting to this “new normal.”
Lastly, we recently launched an initiative to amplify the voices and stories of those on the frontlines of climate change. The challenges posed by the climate crisis are not abstract concepts; they are impacting real lives and communities across the globe and Earth.Org remains committed to amplifying these stories and shedding light on the human dimensions of the climate crisis.
